Harris Connections Cash In at Cal Cup XXI

$100,000 Donald Valpredo Cal Cup Sprint COST OF FREEDOM


Odds-on favorite Cost of Freedom, who skipped next week’s Breeders’ Cup, ran the fastest six furlongs of the meet while breezing to victory in Saturday’s $100,000 Donald Valpredo California Cup Sprint, the opening race in Cal Cup XXI at Oak Tree at Hollywood Park.

Cost of Freedom is a 7-year-old gelding by Cee’s Tizzy, out of the Moscow Ballet mare Freedom Dance, was bred by Harris Farms, is owned by Gary and Cecil Barber and trained by John Sadler.

The former Grade I winner, third in last year’s Breeders’ Cup Sprint, has nine wins in 18 starts, earnings of $752,263 and was coming off a fourth in the Oct. 9 Ancient Title.

He ran the six furlongs in 1:08.58 and won by seven lengths under a hand ride from jockey Joe Talamo at odds of 3-5. Runaway Bandido, the longest shot on the board, was second and A Lil Dumaani third in the field of five.

Swiss Wild Cat took the 21st running of Saturday’s $75,000 Robert H. Walter California Cup Juvenile Fillies Stakes at Oak Tree at Hollywood Park.

Swiss Wild Cat is out of the Swiss Yodeler mare I Can Yodele, was bred by owner Heinz Steinmann and trained by Mike Harrington. She has three wins in ten starts, earnings of $189,552 and was coming off a third in an Oct. 7 allowance.


In Saturday’s $150,000 California Cup Classic Stakes, presented by City National Bank, at Oak Tree at Hollywood Park; Unusual Suspect by Unusual Heat, out of the Crested Wave mare Penpont, finished second and Enriched by High Brite, out of the Nostalgia’s Star mare Li’l Ms. Leonard, finished third.
