Relay For Life Coalinga, Ca

The Harris Farms sponsored team, Fast Track 2 A Cure, on April 9th raised over $3,500 to earn third place honors and won best decorated campsite. The Coalinga event was a success raising over $40,000 for the American Cancer Society, despite some unseasonably cool weather. For anyone who is unfamiliar with what the Relay For Life event is about, The American Cancer Society Relay For Life is an overnight team event that raises awareness of cancer in the community and raises funds to fight cancer. Throughout Relay For Life, teams of friends, families and co-workers commit to keeping at least one team member walking on the track…because cancer never sleeps. The event is full of fun, games and activities for the young and young at heart. People camp out and create a community party atmosphere together, they celebrate life, remember, and honor loved ones and friends, and fight back to find a cure. Each Relay For Life starts with the Survivor’s lap. Cancer survivors walk in celebration of their survivorship, while everyone cheers them on. It’s testimony to the fact that so many people today do survive cancer.

The most inspirational part of the event for me was the Luminaria Ceremony. This ceremony honors cancer survivors and remembers those who have lost their battle with the disease. Each Luminaria bag includes the name of a person who has battled cancer or who is still fighting, and holds a single candle that makes it glow. At dusk all the candles are lit, they illuminate the night and light the way for the walkers, creating a symbolic path of hope.

Our team (Fast Track 2 A Cure) consisted of 14 team members. Their names are, Monica Bazan, Nancy Clover, Janie Davis, Stephanie Vasquez, KC Jeffery, Jazmin Garcia, Melissa Soto, Cami Millan, Rebecca Martinez, Jesus Mendoza, Per Antonsen, Keith Stith, Co-Captain Rachel Stith, and me, Team Captain Lisa Antonsen. I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone involved for their contribution and support of our team. It was a great experience and I hope to see everyone next year!
