THORN SONG RETIRES TO STALLION CAREER AT HARRIS FARMS

February 22, 2011
Harris Farms
Coalinga, California

John Harris announced today that multiple Grade I stakes winner, Thorn Song (Unbridled’s Song-Festal, by Storm Bird), will be standing his first season at stud at Harris Farms in 2011. He was a wire to wire winner of both the Shadwell Turf Mile (105 Beyer) at Keeneland and the Shoemaker Mile (1:33 1/5) at Hollywood Park, and earned $1,132,700, winning 8 of 29 starts, with triple digit Equibase Speed Figures in 18 races. Thorn Song, now 8, is one of eight millionaires and 13 Grade I winners by Unbridled’s Song, and a grandson of Unbridled, the last sire represented by winners in each of the American Triple Crown races.

John Harris stated, “We are very fortunate to get this opportunity to stand this high potential horse here in California. He has overcome dramatic obstacles to get to this point. At the height of his career in 2009 he was faced with a foot condition that’s normally incurable. Thorn Song was sent to Dr. Doug Herthel’s Alamo Pintado Clinic near Santa Ynez. He was one of the first horses to receive stem cell therapy for his foot condition and now after much time and care, he is recovering sufficiently to begin a stallion career. We have now assumed ownership of the stallion. It may be a continuing management challenge for us, but this is just too nice of a horse not to persevere with. He is not only a very attractive individual with a great pedigree, he has a very kind and endearing personality that makes those around him fall in love with him. His ordeal would have made most horses give up or become unmanageable, but he hung in there throughout and I am sure he can go on and be a memorable stallion. Dr. Herthel deserves immense credit for his willingness to work with him and has truly performed a miracle with this horse”.

Thorn Song will stand for an introductory fee of $3500 live foal to selected mares as property of Harris Farms.
